I apologize for my confusing post. By "The first?", I meant that I wasn't certain that pat. 2,862,679 was the very first patent for the reel and that additional, later patents were not issued.

The first paragraph of the patent mentions two earlier patents with "similar" line pickups and line release features. That is why it is not clear to me if 2,862,679 is the only patent covering the Century reel.
