Thompson 100 fly reel
Thompson 100 fly reel
I was surprised to see the reel I bought in the Auction Report section in the new issue of The Reel News. The Thompson 100 came in its original box, in great condition, and with papers. It had dried grease (of course) that a little mineral spirits on Q tips took care of. A few more drops on the stuck ball bearing, manipulated with a tooth pick then wiped clean with a microfiber cloth, repeated three times, got that moving again. After a rinse and dry, a drop of sewing machine oil on the bearing, spindle and contact points has it running like a Swiss watch. The reel is now wearing a protective coat of Renaissance micro-crystaline wax polish. It does have a little bit of swirl around the handle from being, well, handled. It will not remain unused, though, it's an exceptionally fine bit of kit built to be used and will team up with a 5wt silk line and a classic 8' bamboo rod to chase Appalachian trout in a couple of months.
