Weird Roddy surf casting reel

Post by Thruxton Jay »

Hi, this is my first post. I've collected old reels for some time now and acquired this unusual Roddy surf casting reel.
It's probably late 60's, has a machined and anodised aluminium spool, no tool take apart and a really odd anti-backlash system. The only reference I could find to it was two old ebay Australia ads so I know it's a Roddy model 570 but that's all.
I've tried it and the braking system works really well - I actually couldn't get it to backlash! Anyway, hopefully someone can tell me more about it.

The reel has a fairly simple anti-backlash device with a line-activated bail that tightens an internal drum brake. It's similar to a lot of ABLs used on early casting reels, notably South Bend. I did a cursory search for a patent, but those take a lot of time.
