Wheeler & McGregor

Post by fooman »

I posted an inquiry on who to contact to sell a reel and had 2 people from this site tell me to put it on ebay.Since I do not ANYTHING about the Wheeler & McGregor reel I put it on ebay with a high reserve until I can research this reel further. The reason ignorant people like me come here is for your honest experienced opinions. You people are the true collectors of these items and I dont want a guy offering me 10cents if its worth more.I've looked all over the web for this reel and cannot find a value so does anyone know what fair market value I might get out of this real I would very much appreciate it...thank you Mike

eBay is a crap-shoot; some things go for more than they are worth, others go for less.

I'd say the eBay range on your reel is about $800 to $1200.

looking at the front view photo of your reel it looks like the level wind mechanism is broken. Is that so? I believe there is supposed to be a loop that the line passes through.

And . . .

... there is a screw missing upper left on the handle side, and the foot is 'notched' in the front, and the worm gear housing is missing, and the finish is iffy - see related comments on the For Sale board under the Offer to sell, only to be told to go bid on eBay? post.

Winky & Geezer are right, your reel has some issues.

I have borrowed the second picture from Ron Gast (thanks Ron) and it shows the level wind housing, which is missing from your reel. The notch in the foot doea not help either.

I guess I should have actually looked at your reel before giving an estimate. Duh.

Given the missing parts, there is no way to guess what it might be worth, but it will only be a fraction of its value if complete.

Thanks for everyones reply. The reason I placed it on EBAY is because after posting here I received emails telling me to do so.It is missing a screw and the housing for the level wind it seems, but it still winds smoothly. With a little polishing it is not far from looking like the picture of the #3 posted.Would you suggest I polish it?And with what?Since I'm not a collector(I received this from my mother who picked it up along with a Ace Hardware rod/reel and a Johnson Century reel at a rummage sale for a couple dollars) I know nothing about this reel other it looks old,and theres never any on EBAY for sale and a few people are looking for them. But I am smart enough not to take the first persons words that its worth nothing because its missing a screw. What I'm asking from the experts here is a crash course in selling this reel and what my real expectations are...thank you Mike

Mike: Don't polish your reel. I think you will find it is a nickel plated brass version, and not German silver like Ron's in the photo above. I thought I saw brass showing on the oil cap.

I was one of the people who told you to put it on eBay. The reason being that if you know nothing this is the place to sell. It will sell, and the market will decide what the viewers think the reel is worth. I guess I should have told you to start the auction with a low start bid and no reserve. That is the way to get the best evaluation of what it is worth. Since you have very little in the reel, what would you have to lose? The screw is of little consequence - but the level wind problems are a little worse. Being a #4 size it will attract attention from collectors.

reel parts for wheeler/mcgregor

Post by fooman »

If I decide not to sell this reel is there anyplace to get these parts (screw, level wind housing) or borrow them from another reel?Would it be possible to have the level wind housing made? What rod would you suggest to match up with this reel for display purposes without empting my bank account and getting "hooked" into the vintage tackle collecting? Thanks Mike

Mike: None of us can promise you won't get hooked on this stuff...matter of fact, we would all put our money the other way :D

the parts issue is really tough...your reel is not common and it might be quite awhile before the parts you need materialize. These guyz might have some suggestions as to what you could put on to make it cosmetically better, but the ultimate value will only be realized with the correct parts. if you just keep it for display, I wouldn't worry about it. As Milt indicated, the screw is no great problem, but the housing around the levelwind will require a bit of luck. Some do get parts manufactured, but others see that as something best not done...thus the suggestion that you wait for the real thing.

re rods, there are plethora of 5', cork handle rods that would be fine with this reel. if you like it, that's the one!
