Penn Question

Post by ak-fish »

I recently picked up what is obviously an old Penn reel. It is identical to an Atlantic 14, but the headplate says only "Atlantic Ocean Reel No. 14 250 Yards." It has a hatched clicker button and smooth black sideplates. No where does it say "Penn." My question is this: Did Penn sell reels without the Penn name, or was this sold by someone else just made by Penn? Thanks in advance.

I think it is the Jan 2005 ORCA Reel News has a short article and picture from the Penn Archives showing a large number of different dies Penn used to stamp their reels for sale by the trade. I believe Atlantic Ocean was one of the stamps that was pictured in the article. I am in MN so don't have access to my back issues...the author's name was Bruce something I believe?

Cheers,

Yes, others have asked here about the Surf Angler, Atlantic, etc. that were Penn trade reels but can't seem to track down the threads for you. Might do a little searching to see if you have any luck.

According to Herb Henze, Atlantic Reels were made by a company founded by former Penn employees. They were in business for less than a year before Penn welcomed them back into the fold. I've seen three or four different models and the boxes came in at least two distinct mottled patterns.
