what kind of line to use?

Post by Robin Sayler »

ok i know its a little early still and there is still ice on the lakes up here but i'm going on my yearly trip this july to canada fishing and this year i'm planning on using all tackle and reels older than i am. I was wondering what line to use on an old baitcaster. I'll probably use a pflueger freespool nobby or akron. I'm not sure if i should use a braided line or monofiliment? just looking for some opinions and input.
thanks

Younguy,
Braided nylon by all means! The only time I took old equipment to fish in Canada I made sure I had a Pflueger Supreme filled with 15 lb. test braided nylon on a tubular steel rod, Medium action. Wanted to make sure nothing would go wrong with my outfit, the Supreme is a sure thing. While I fish often with my Nobby with 9 to 12 lb. line aroung area lakes here in North Missouri, I wouldn't trust it in Canada. While I've never used the Akron, I'd say it would hold up much better than the Nobby. If you want to fish with a glass rod, a solid model made by Heddon in the 1950s would be a good choice.

Oh, I had a sudden inspiration at the thought of some youngguy trying to figure out what line to use on some old baitcaster...something like "your dock or mine"...but then i thought better about it :D ..and yes, that really isn't like me...a budding new year's resolution?...nah!
