Wisconsin Reels

Post by Eric Borgerding »

I am fairly new to reel collecting and am looking to get started with Wisconsin name/trade reels. Any suggestions on how I can learn more/where I can look?

Also, interested in purchasing WI reels.

Thanks

Virginia Reels

Post by FSREPAIR »

Eric, I have an auto fly reel called "The Virginia Reel" It was made by the Virginia Reel Company in Madison, WS. The reel has no gears & or springs. The reel uses a rubber band which is wound when you strip the line of the reel to cast. Then you simply release the brake to wind the line in. I can email you some pics of the reel and of the original ad if you like. My email address is: Randy

There is a book by Bob Slade titled THE HISTORY & COLLECTIBLE FISHING TACKLE OF WISCONSIN (whew) that might help you out a bit. It does list many makers although information on reels is limited.

Hi Eric,

Welcome to ORCA. Lots of great trade reels out there from WI, but you might want to get a back copy of Hunting & Fishing Collectables Magazine from sometime in 2004, it had an article on Wisconsin reels made in Stevens Point and surrounding region. You can get back copies from their website.

The May 2006 Reel News will have an article as part of my columns on Reels of the Trade on Morley-Murphy Co. of Green Bay, WI. I have already finished articles coming out in the next two years on John Pritzlaff, William Frankfurth, and William Grosse, all of Milwaukee, and I am working on Sumner-Morris (Madison) and E. Garnisch (Ashland). If you want a general overview of WI trade tackle, see my article "A Keg of Nails and a Heddon 150: Wholesale Hardware Companies and the Tackle Trade" in the June 2005 NFLCC Magazine. It has short histories of Pritzlaff and Frankfurth, among others.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Dr. Todd
