Here's a pic! Well, maybe just the box...

what in the world happened to this poor sucker?! Looks like an early pyrolin Heddon lure!

Here's some dialogue from the fellow selling it...at a minimum, i would bet this box is a tuffy.

"John,
I appreciate your interest in the reel and welcome the opportunity. I can give you as much history about the reel that I know to date. The reel and box were purchased about two years ago in the desert of California. I was on vacation visiting my family and went to a local flea market. The gentleman that had the reel purchased it, as we see it now, from a garage sale somewhere in the desert. I took interest in the box and reel because I knew that the Meisselbach name is a sought after reel. I like to collect empty boxes and mate them up with the correct items. After looking for this particular reel I have noticed that it is not very common at all. I have constantly scoured eBay, and numerous other resources, looking for a nicer mate for the box. To this date I have never seen a No. 100 Bull's Eye Level Winding Reel with theses color markings. The box is stamped "Dark Clear" very faintly at the bottom of the box. As with a lot of the Heddon lures that have done this over the years, it sure would be nice to see this reel in it's intact state.
Feel free to pass this information along to the ORCA board and it's members.

Good gracious, what a nightmare. Now's your chance John, with that manufacturer's description, you can cast both plates out of a smoke colored epoxy! (I just have a blast thinking up projects for you  ).

Nice reel, John. It looks a bit better than some of mine, so maybe I'll upgrade.

Tell the owner he's not going to find a reel that is marked "dark clear". Bullseye reels came in 4 factory colors: black, brown, red and green. The reels are not marked with their color. I'm not sure what color dark clear is, but it was not a factory color. Several "end of the day" colors have been found, including apricot, white, pie-bald, and probably others. Jim Garrett & Skip Brooks color collect Bullseyes and a transparent apricot colored reel or two have been found. Maybe that's dark clear.

Well, here's the other pic he posted, so you can see the label...for $20, I would think this box and hardware would be a good deal for anyone collecting these! ...(and no..I don't get a cut :D --I was just curious as to whether others had seen one of these early bakelites go so far South!

I wonder if was naptha in the grease that did that: the same thing that causes crazing and swelling of prewar "ernoid" handles?
