Empire City reel

Post by Reelman »

Here is one a group of reels I bought from somebody who sent me some pictures. From the little I could see of the foot I thought it was a Pflueger trade reel. And the name sounded something like Pflueger would name one of their reels. When I got it in. The foot was stamped Empire City on one side of the foot the trade mark you can see in the pictures on the other side. Now I am not so sure. Later I will put up the other reel I could use some help with.

Hi Merv,
Definitely doesn't look like a Pflueger to me due to the design of the center area in the pfoot and "tab" attachment to the plates. The only similarity is that the ends are indeed rounded. I've also never heard or seen anything other than "Pflueger" stamped on the foot ends.

That was about all I could see of the foot. The rounded edges. So I took a chance. Still it is a nice looking reel. And does not take up much room.

Empire City

Hi Merv,

You have a very nice Abbey & Imbrie "Empire City" trade reel circa 1900-1920. They were made by a number of companies under this name, including Montague and Pflueger. The Empire City reels marked on the foot are some of the more difficult to find.

A nice addition to any collection.

Cheers,

Dr. Todd

Merv,
The Empire City reel was made by Montague. It has the "Moog" foot which is similar to the Pflueger foot in that it has rounded ends. It sis Pat. # 524,341 issued to Frederick W. Moog & assigned to the United States Net & Twine Co. which was purchased by Montague. Pat was granted Aug. 14, 1894. It was Abbey & Imbrie's less expensive line.
