Pflueger Surf reel ?? Black plates

Post by fishbugman »

I am unable to find my Pflueger Pfacts CD and most of my reel books are packed in boxes in the shed. I am having brain lock...Is the reel in photos below called a Pflueger Surf Reel even though it is only marked Pflueger? The foot has single slot screws and is marked 250. What time frame were these made in? I was just asked some questions about this reel and froze up...stupefied! Thanks, Richard

Richard, good to see you here. I don't recall this reel being covered in Pflueger Pfacts but maybe in the pre-1920s saltwater article Bob Miller did - my copy is at work and memory is bad. The '07-'08 Enterprise Catalog F-26 identifies this reel as the "Improved Round Multiplying Reel". But the photo also shows printed on the headplate in the hard rubber above the inset metal is "Pflueger Surf Casting".

I would say you could call it a "Pflueger surf reel". As you may have come across in the past, these appear to have a variety of markings and none at all. I have seen and own a bigger version like yours with just "Pflueger" in the small stamped letters and I also have two 200 yd size reels with no marking at all. I have also seen "Pflueger Surf Casting" on this reel somewhere in the past also.

The real question, however, is how can I obtain it from you for my collection! Anyway, hope this helped.

Thanks Brian...that kind of cleared my head. I knew the reel was pre-1916 but didn't know that it could date back to'07-'08. I also have a larger one 350 and another one that is unmarked 200, but they are dogs.

OK, that brings up question two...from the same time period there is a Pflueger TARPON. Are they also found unmarked, marked Pflueger only and marked Pflueger Tarpon? If yes, what identifying features make them separate model names? I think they were made in roughly the same sizes...like 200,250,300 for the Surf Reel and Tarpon 250,300,350 or something like that.

Thanks...I am glad to be back...my mistake in leaving...another story.

This is from the 1906/07 catalog and does not show any markings on the headplate. It does state engraving shows 250 yard reel. This one came in 150 thru 450 yard models (in 50 yd incrememnts)..

Hope this helps.

Jerry
