Question about portage atlas
I have a 40 yard version and it has screws on the tailplate and the pins on the handle side. Every other atlas or almost any raised pillar i've seen has pins on the tailside and screws on the handle side. The reel looks great but doesn't spin well at all. Is it normal to have the pins on the handle side and i just haven't seen it before?

Hi,
Found three Winchester Raised Pillar reels with screws on tailplate and pinned headplates. Two are marked 2142 and 2242 Winchester respectively. The 1st one is 40 yd, and the latter is 60 yd. Also, have an unmarked reel exactly like the 2142 with typical foot and handle nob, so will list this reel as an unmarked Winchester also.
Now, also found a Portage Atlas 40 yd Raised Pillar reel with the screwed tailplate design. Don't have many other Portage so don't know if this is standard or not.
None of the Montague reels in my collection have this design feature, so maybe it is a Winchester & Portage thing.
My thought is that maybe these were made for a left handed operator! Hmm...Any other ideas out there?

Portage Atlas
Just recently published a Pfacts article in the Reel News on the Atlas discussing the rivets vs screws thing. Check it out if you have a copy. I have some reels just like yours. These are early versions with "Atlas" beneath the Portage logo (later ones above) with either E.A. Pflueger-style cranks or early bone knobs on the crank. These style reels predated the Portage logo by quite a few years. Enterprise probably just stamped the new logo on some older stock head plates. Hope this helps. Bob (sometimes with semi-dependable pfacts)
