Anyone know what this reel is? Only markings on reel is 250 on foot. Everything else looks to be a Pflueger. It works just like a Autopla reel. The back of the reel is marked Trade mark with a T over a Q and it also says Pat.Apl'd.for.
Looks like the back auto winder could be an add on piece but the reel isnt marked so I dont know. Any comments would be great -
Sure looks like a Pflueger, but the Autopla end device was not a winder. It was a release knob to set the reel in or out of "standard" or "automatic" mode of operation, and was called a "safety spring clutch". Check the "Pfluger Pfacts" book for an article explaining manner of operation. Have you taken the reel apart to check it out? There were some interesting patents for the Autopla, notably those of J.F. White (1,914,470 and 1,914,471) that were originally assigned to a Mr. Henry D. Lane of Richmond CA. Enterprise later acquired both and incoporated them into their Autopla. White must have had his own prototype. Your reel could be a Pflueger prototype during the period in which the Pfluegers were acquiring the patents and developing the reel. Problem is, I don't know the meaning of that unusual trademark. Someone will, you can bet! Hope this bit of info helps. Bob
Bob,
Thanks, No I havent had it apart yet , I just called it a winder , it works just like the Autopala , pull the knob to release the Automatic mode.
Thank you for your input - Hopefully I will get more on this.
I did buy it from a guy who was selling his late fathers collection and he was out of California.

Maybe this is the same reel but I recall seeing a very similar one sell on eBay in April of 2004 sometime. Reason it comes to mind is that when we went to Fife, WA for the Natiional Convention, I saw what I thought was the same reel in a display there. Interested in any unusual Pflueger reels, Paul Mortenson and I both noticed it and asked the owner if he had just won it. To our surprise, he said he had owned it for several years and picked it up for his "wierd reel" collection. It had the same Temco/Pontiac headplate but the aluminum tailplate. Paul and I were amazed to see two of these that appeared to us also to be prototypes. Maybe now there are three?
Thanks Brian,
I did buy it on Ebay about a year ago but it was grouped with 3 other reels and the pic only showed the headplate, and he had a poor description. I bought the lot because it included a nice Meisselbach Sea Line #75 and this was a super nice surprise to find with it!
Thank you for your input , Jeff
I checked the Pflueger Pfacts book and the patent from White looks very simillair. The reel is not identical to the drawing but it is a 2 screw takeapart , the clutch button has the same cross marks/design , and it also has a screw in the top of the rear plate as seen in fiqure 2 of the patent. Who knows, I included a couple of more pics.
