A few days at ZEBCO!!!! YIKES!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) :o  8) :!: :?:   cool-thumb jump jump jump canadian usa Well folks, I arived for (schooing at the ZEBCO Plant on the 1st of March! We were givin instuctions, lectures and introductions, hmmm! so good so far! next we would take the tour! ok so what else is NEW? Hmmmnnn! All the employess were all looking very happy! Thats a good sign, then more talks then more plant tours! I was asked not to take pics of the labs yes several labs, or of machinery etc! As questions and we all recived the answeres Yes FIN NOR will be built! yes we got our hands on new reels that will be sold iin a season or so! We saw how they tested for salt water and humidity damage and then more lab tours, Then the new product room of items for 2006 and newer, they are well advanced! then lunch then more new product! then more imformation the the ZEBCO archives of reels, I saw a cardinal 4 with no serial # even Mr. Clint BEELER didnt realize it had no #! Then a ZEBCO Langly that was broke, I ask Mr BEELER if he would like it fixed? yes he said and then he gave it to me to get it fixed!, I had parts for it in my tool box! I had one of my own that I was going to fix in the motel room, ( I used the parts for ZEBCOs ha ha , next day I gave it to Mr. Beeler to place back in the colection! Was he happy! day 2 , we went to the other building they own where all repairs and new items are shipped from! We alll had to take new reels apart and the re assemble them before we would be allowed to keep our warrenty centers, darn , those left hand reels! ( However the work stopped very fast as Mr. Beeler and his son brought in alll yes all of the original proto types of R.D. Hulls reels! He placed them before me and wanted me to start taking them apart to see how they are made! Well people that honor made me start to float off the ground! Needles to say all worked stoped and all eyes were on my tools taking the proto types apart, a drop or 2 of oil and puting them together again, I didnt do all of them as time was running out! Ther are still over 60 of them I need to do! (I will get them done!) By then it was getting late and we were going to have to leave so the building could be locked up for the night! Back at the Motel, the Radison about 7 pm mr Beeler comes in and gave me a present! a brand new 1970 Zebco professional Spinning reel with all the paperwork etc! the thing about this reel? its all see thru lucite and never had line on it! ( Ben) its MINE! you can take pics for your new book!, and thenwe talked well into the night! Next day after class, Clint jr came by the shop and we took off in his BMW to go to his home in Tulsa, Did I get a near heart attact when I say row after row of reels and some more proto types, people, what I saw next was beyond the emagination! all yes all of the history of ZEBCO befoe it became ZEBCO was all the original hand written documatation from R.D. HULL What a treasure! every word, cost, production, runs, styles, way too much to see! And the best part of this is that ORCA will be allowed to use all this imformation for our liabray! I know that Clint jr. is going to do a book about ZEBCO, However what I saw and had in my hands would fill a 8 x 12 room! The pics of celeberties , the offer of ABU garcia to sell ABU to ZEBCO! ok nuf on this now Harvy , its your turn to help do the cataloging items to go into our liabray you can make copies naturaly the originals are going into the BEELER Musium they are anting to put up! ORCANS, how wonderful it is the Beelers are allowing ORCA to share this Imformation! Your AWE STRUCK member Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG OHIO on a frozen Lake ERIE!

I can see the headline in the Tulsa paper:

Reel Repairman Has Heart Attack
Visiting reel repairman Milton Lorens was stricken with a heart attack when visiting the home of Clinton Beeler...

We'd all feel the same, Milt. It sounds like a great time.

Milt:
Great story. I am just glad that you had a chance to see and enjoy what the Beelers told me at Columbia Lakes. From what I remember from our conversation, Clinton will send me all that information on Models, production numbersand ect. when he gets it all together and straightened out. I really would like a COMPLETE set of Zebco catalogues so others can do their own research in the future. I will leave the repair information up to you grease monkeys to worry about. There seems to be enough people in the repair business that have that stuff so if I get request for it, I know where to turn.
Keep us posted and IF you do feel a pain in the chest, I am sure we can find a 12 volt battery and a set of jumper cables.
Thanks again, Milt.

FOR STARTERS!!!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) 8) :!: :?:  cool-thumb yay-banana jump jump jump canadian usa , Heart attact? no time for that luxury! As I always do I take some reels, about 100 of the older ones to show prespective new members what ORCA is about! I had them strung out in my room, a few proto types, a as new Lashmaster with paperwork, and my reel thats pictured on my ORCA imfo and some lucite bait casters etc etc! Well Carol Grisham had been teasing me with her personal 50th anaversery 33 #260 of 1000 these reels are nicley done with gold embelishments and front cover design, on a nice wooden block and with the presentation paper work signed by R.D.HULLS WIFE and the nice lucite case over it all! I have to have one of those reels! My feeble brain is wondering what would buy the reel, I then gave her a ORCA Application, and asked her to join ORCA I said that reel is a good start! I said, can I buy that reel? hohoha, thats a joke! Then Jody, she starts teasing me about wanting the reel, so I gave her a application to ORCA and told them both to come over to the hotel and see about a100 of my antique reels, as the other warrenty folks also wanted to see the reels, Carol and Jody are Consumer Service people for ZEBCO! Well about a hour or so after we went back to the hotel, other guys were looking at the reels, in walks Carol and Jody, They started looking at the reels , and I couldnt stand it anymore, I said Carol pick out any three reels except my one in the wooden box as its my TRADE MARK , I will swap 3 for the 33 ! NO WAY she said! I said take 4 of them! hmmnn, nope! she said Its Like your hand made reel in the box! I want to keep it! ( NUTS I gota have one of these reels now what? well they left the guys stayed I was depresed! Time to go to diner so we left to eat , talked reels and drank coffee, No sleep for me I gota have one of those reels! The next day was the day Clinton and his dad came in with the proto types, after the work stoped and my work begain on the proto types, it was time to close up shop! darn that 33 50th reel was at my left elbo! NO I WONT TAKE IT! It was like teasing a hungry pit bull dog with a steak! Next day we worked on those blasted left hand new reels! Young Clint came in to take me to his home , on the way out , Carol said , COL. your forgot your reel! I thought heck, I cant even leave that left had reel on the bench, I said Ok and picked up the left hand reel , she said not that one! This one and handed me her Cased 33 50th year reel and said, Col. its now in very good hands! Folks Carol Grishamn will make on excelent ORCA MEMBER! To all of you , ZEBCO people in my thoughts are (THE BEST) the world has to offer! they make you a part of the ZEBCO Faimly! That wonderful reel now sits ahead of My bronze Mori statue of the BOY FISHING atop of the TV for all to see! Col. Milton lorens aka SWIM JIG on a frozen Lake ERIE in OHIO

Great Stories!

Post by Robyn Summerlin »

Thanks for sharing the stories, Milt. It sounds like you had more fun in Oklahoma than you would have had fishing on Lake Erie, and better weather, too. My personal thanks to the Beelers and the Grishams for making your trip so memorable.

Honor their request not to take pics in certain areas! Also make certain to wear very comfotable shoes! its a long walk! The Zebco Musium is fantastic, one thing about it, when you do take the TOUR, you will have a high regard for ZEBCO! when you see the testing of reels and rods etc! And you will see a tremedous amount of very happy employs all working together, the most modern machinery and factory repair people! The parts inventory is fantastic and they pride themselfs with fast service! and they hold us as warrenty centers to very high Standards! YUP! you have the corect one!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) 8) 8) :!: :?:   cool-thumb jump yay-banana jump :type: jump usa Yup. you gots de correct ones! hope they also have the factory paper work with them, if not I can make you a copy!If you take a close look at you clear one, not the geaing? isnt the main shaft worm gear the same as a CARDINA 4? I havend had time to take it totaly down, we did take the side cover off and spool, and used zebos HOT SAUCE geeese on the gears and the Hot Sauce oil on the moving shaft eyc! you mentioned the 3 star crown on the side, mine has the crown NO STAR, its a silver color with black outlines! I must admit its the smothest reel I have ever worked with, No HANG UPS or raspy feel to it! The part that is impressive is the list 7 spools for replacments from the empty one to 6-8-10-12-15 &18 lb line! Also the lifetime bail spring, HMMMNN! now as I, phil White and Harvy Garrison are alrady over a (CENTURY OLD) ha ha , what did the consider lifetime? I gota ask the Clints that Question HA HA As far as I can see in the see thru part the bail spring is a CARDINAL 4? also check the bail roller! way ahead of its time for corosion resitance! after all they were designed for salt water use! Wonder how we can use this in future fishing contest for ORCA? we made need to use different catigories, like older, pre 1940, post 1940 to 1965? and proto types or specilty non mased produced reels!? or had made reels? AGAIN, My reel is not for sale trade or barter! too much sentiment attached to this reel! A ft. note about Clinton R. Beeler sr., he never stops inventing! He has now Produced the Silent Fisherman a (Crappie jigging Machine) and its advertized in the CRAPPIE MAG) Also Clint senior still comes into the plant and has Coffee with the folks! He and his son are very dedicated to ZEBCO! Your Ohio Conection On a Cold Lake Erie Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG
