Dating early Pflueger Nobby's?

Post by Bill Sonnett »

I have cleaned and fished with a couple of dozen Nobbys over the years but one I picked up in Montpelier has me scatching my head. Four things stand out immediately as different from the run on the mill Nobbys. First the extra pawl is in an early "deep" type threaded holder and the receptical it screws into on the side of the reel has a smaller rim than any I've seen. Secondly, there is no screw type retainer at the left end of the levelwine mechanism. In otherwords the threaded shaft fits into a solid cast piece of Aluminum that is all one piece with the threaded shaft cover. Third the round cover that the theaded shaft fits into on the crank side of the reel is contains no printing of any kind. Finally, in checking the dozen or so Nobbys that are here at present, none have the slotted screws on the bottem that this on does. Just interested in your thoughts. Thanks

Bill...I think the pics in the link are of the same reel you are talking about...It is from the late 1930s. This particular box was inspected in 1938, according to the stamp on the bottom...Notice this reel has 6 patent numbers on the tail plate...Hope this helps...Jerry
