Extending / adjustable length handles?

Post by Dr. Rob »

Was thinking about reels with extending / adjustable length handles / crankarms.

If I recall, there have been several. Peetz had one in the '30's, sort of an elbowlike foldout thing. DAM had one in the '90's, with sort of a quick-release adjust feature. Everol, but those were slotted crankarms with a knob screw. Several have had multiple-hole cranks, but that doesn't count.

Didn't one of the really early Fin-Nors have something, or am I confusing it with something Kovalovsky did?

Please, jar my memory...

The best known adjustable-length crank is probably Harvey Carlton's 1903 design, but there were a couple of others patented before that, starting in 1881. The 1881 crank telescoped.

You have two "buts" in your post, which sounds as if you're eliminating those kinds of designs from consideration, so what adjustable-length cranks can we include?

Here's Carlton's:

Sorry, I didn't mean to be such a but-head. Hee.

Oh, I don't know Steve... Creative. That's what I was looking for. Things new or innovative for their time. Slotted handles are cool, such as Carlton's above. (really nice design, very elegant execution) Or mundane, such as those currently available on new Daiwas or aftermarket parts.

Telescopic, that sounds neat.

So to date, they've come up with telescoping cranks, slotted cranks, folding "elbowlike" cranks, multiple-hole cranks, "quick-release adjust" cranks. I've heard rumors that Penn is working on a crank that extends after being polished with some kind of ---- paste, but I can't think of any other elegant designs.

The Penn one is known as the Pinocchio crank...
