What is it!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:) :o :? 8) :!: :?:  jump jump usa I have a few items that has me a bit wondering! first is a reel that is open with holes or embelishments, has a wooden handle that is screwed on ,looks like a FLY REEL? however it says (Barney&Berry inc made in USA on the botom of the foot is a 60 with a line under the 60. What I find unique is that both sides of the spool are drilled to acept the Wooden Handle and the Counterbalance weight. the handle thats in use is threaded into the side of the spool, and the handle is attched witha long threaded screw. the other side of the spool has the holes exactly oposite however are not threaded> My thoughs on this is , ( whom ever picked up this part could drill and tap it and it would work from either side! Wrong, as the tail side holds the ratchet that works the click front or back, The Click button moves easly and works well. The reel is plated a dull material and is a satin type finish not a smooth bright plating! Piller to piller is 2&7/8ths in. the foot is 2&5/8ths long by1/2in at the narrow parts 7/8ths in at the wide part that goes into the frame. The spool is 2&5/16 in across. piller to piller with is 7/8ths wide, handle wood part is 7/8ths long. Trust you experts can Identify this reel. Next a badge (Cloth outside rim is a light Blue inside is a combo of colors Purple with the word SKISH in white some lite blue lnes like ripple water then a angle with a Light Blue band and in light blue is the word MERIT on a white background, more blue wavy lines on a purple background and in white leters is FLY on Purple back ground, this then tapers to a point of blue border, demensions are 2&3/4 in wide, And 3&5/16ths in to the botom point! I belive Harvy had some writings on this however I dont remeber if the word merit was used! Thanks in advance for any help! Your Ohio conection on lake ERIE Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG

Do you have a picture of the first item. If I remember right Barney&Berry was used by Winchester. I think I have a reel around here some where marked Barney&Berry. Here is the link to the the SKISH badge that Harvey is interested in.

Milt,

Yes, Barney & Berry was a tradename of Winchester/Hendryx, as outlined in Phil's research on Winchester. The company was an old sporting goods house dating back to the 1870s whose name was purchased by Winchester as they expanded their fishing line. I have spinners on Barney & Berry cards, as well as a standard 60-yard NLW casting reel like yours. They are not uncommon; they show up on eBay about every week or two. The carded Barney & Berry tackle is much more difficult to find.

Cheers,

Dr. Todd

Milt, I have always assumed that those holes on the back side of the spool were created so that the rivets or machine screws holding on the knob could be peened over.

reel?

:D 8) :!: :?:  cool-thumb jump usa WINCHESTER? hope I dont need a gun permit HA HA, Phil the holes I speak of are on oposite sides of the spool, almost like it didnt mater what side was used, the gap or the part where the line goes separates them, check one of your reels, looks as if the spool could be used from either side except for the click atc, and that may have been able to be changed like a left or right hand reel! Milt,
I have a B & B pole. It's metal and has agate guides. Not in great shape. Was able to find a little lnfo in " antique & collectibles FISHING RODS identification & value guide" 1997. D.B. Homel- author. page 98. I don't know the manufacture since they were a sporting goods store.

As Teal says above, the maker was Winchester Mfg. Co. The rod should have a number on it, which identifies the model, etc. The total story is explained in my book on Winchester Fishing Tackle. I believe that the steel Winchester rods were actually a Bristol product - whether partially finished, or completed by Horton I was never able to learn. I offered to trade the Winchester Museum some good stuff for their museum if they would investigate this for me in the Winchester archives, but they refused and just wanted me to give them my stuff.

Phil,
I dug the pole out and checked for numbers. Nothing, just B & B. Has a sliding foot lock with a finger rest. It's missing the end eyelit, about 4 1/2 foot long. 8 sided steel rod with thick red agate guides(2) encased in german silver eyelits. I have somewhere a booklet you wrote on winchester. Is it listed in there? Thanks.

It's an 8 sided (octagonal) rod? Something screwy there - or at least very unusual?

Is it telescopic? Or is it solid steel? Or tubular steel?

Phil,
It is solid steel and octagon. Black in color. Double checked B & B. Same as described above. Your guess better than mine. Will be bringing it ti the Nationals...
