Golden West question for Bob M. - or Stu L ?

Bill C. on Clark's board wrote:Does anyone know which model came first - that with the screw-head or knurled oil cap? I've noticed the screw--head ones seem to be much more common.
Thanks !

:) 8) :!: :?:  :type: jump usa Ron, a good way to decide this! Labor cost money, thus the Knurled one woul be the most costly, the Screw -head would be more pratical from the MFGs point, as these could be farmed out to some company that only made screw types o fproducts! This is one of the reasons Shakespere sold all their screw machins with exception of a few they kept to do a the proto runs, also the war effort was upon us! Knurling is a several procedure method and very few machines could do all the procedures when it comes to knurling! The other factor on Knurling is WASTE! Trust this helps some on the question Your Ohio Conection On Lake Erie Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG

that makes total sense, Milt, and is certainly the way I was thinking.
Guess I'll add to the question - any idea when the changeover took place?
thanks again

Golden West bearing cap

The logical person to answer this question is THE Pflueger fly reel expert, Stu Lawson. But as to my humble opinion (worth what it costs) I feel certain the screw cap was first as the two reels I have with this feature are low serial number reels-lowest 2609. They sold these rascals up until at least 1929 and you can be sure they sold a lot of them. Bob (on occasion the pfacts)

Golden West bearing cap

PS-Pflueger had bins full of zillions of bearing caps interchageable on various models (e.g. Delite fly reel). Easy for them to use them on the Golden West. Bob again (a guess is better than admitting you know nothing!)
