a buddy got this with a bunch of fly tying stuff he bought several years ago..does anyone know what it is and it's mission in life? It's some kind of wrapping device, but not sure what it wraps!
this thing is bigger than the pic might suggest...Steve says it weighs about 20 lbs and turns a 9 inch circle or so...maybe for rod wrapping?
Tough to tell from this angle but it looks like an old Herter's Spinner Making jig. When my dad bought out Herter's fly tying stock when the company went bankrupt in the 1970s there were a few of these lying around, you would take piano wire and the crank would twist it so you would have a solid twisted eye (if memory serves there was a little notch where the swivel could rest while you turned the eye of the spinner). The little steel notch was used to "crimp" the other end, so you could use a spring to close it after you had put on the appropriate bell-shaped body, clevis, and spinner blade. For a few pennies you could turn out MEPPS knockoffs that caught almost as many fish.
jump usa John, Dr. Todd may be corect, however we too used these things to spin wire shafts and also to finish the loop! We have 9 of them left and several Jack Masters modified to turn the SWIM JIG shafts after the beads, spiner blades and the loop were lined up, three turns makes the finish twist on the loop end! However the item you show, looks more like a cane spliter for making cane parts to make rods with, and the spiner handle most likly is to wrap the rods and rod eyes, you will need several views befor a certainy of use can be defined! Your weight of 20lbs most likly makes it a factory item, the ones we use are at 7 lbs. My guess is a item for making rods! Your Ohio Conection On Lake Erie Col. Milton Lorens aka SWIM JIG
