Shakespeare Wyoming Reel Info ???

Post by Ed S »

Just found this at a local antique mall- any info would be appreciated. Shakespeare Wyoming NLW casting reel, marked 80 yards, patented on foot. I have never seen this reel name before, reel looks exactly like an uncle sam.

Ed, Sounds like a trade reel to me. Seems like I have heard of such a reel but never seen one. Would like to see some pictures. PLEASE.

Hi

Yes, please post pics. I have not run across "Wyoming" as a trade name in my years of searching.

Is it marked "Shakespeare Wyoming" or is it a Shakespeare reel marked "Wyoming"?

I'm salivating as much as Harvey is!

Reel is stamped Shakespeare on the handle side plate in what I think of as the fancy script- found on reels Shakespeare reels from the early teens(?). On the tail plate it is stamped WYOMING in block letters.

I initially thought that maybe someone had taken the face plate from a shakespeare reel and attached it to a Montague made reel, but the more I look at it I am not sure. The click knob sure looks like the one on all of my Shakespeare reels.

As for the pictures, I am still working on that- Sorry.

Here are a couple pictures of Ed's reel

He named it right. It is a "Uncle Sam" from maybe the early twenties.
Now, what does the Wyoming" have to do with it?
Calling Dr. Todd,
Calling Dr.Todd!
And I don't want to hear the story like the Indian reel.
You homesteaded in Wyoming and they gave you one!

stamping

I haven't seen as many SP reels as Harvey, but I've never seen a SP stamping in all caps or a font like that. With a riveted frame, a headcap that fits is all that is needed. A trade reel would never have SP on it. I think it's a mutt. Jim

Jim,
If it is the same script as this, and I think it is, it is standard on all Uncle Sam's.

And all that I have are solid frame with the pillars riveted on the tailplate.

script

Agreed there, Harvey. I was talking about the Wyoming script. Couldn't a SP headplate have been added to replace another?

:) 8)  :!: :?:  :type: jump jump usa , what year did Wyoming become a State admited into the USA UNION? posible celibration, or---- , do the homework, does the bearing caps fit a (UNCLE SAM Shakespere? same for the handle, then you could check the gear ratio? also check the CLICK Spring, Shakespere in that period had a unusual shape spring, check the screws against a shakespere of the ERA! also show the botom of the foot, looks as if it says somthig about a pat? It will be interesting to see how mwny show up in the next year! Life is GOOD , and so is a good mystery! Your Ohio Conection on Lake Erie Col. Milt Lorens aka SWIM JIG

Cool, I forgot about the Atkinson -- but it didn't say Shakespeare. I guess the jury is still out. Jim
