The reel has some brassing. It seems it will work fin but for the tension cap on the right hand (handle side) of the reel. The one on it doesn't screw on all the way. As a result the spool wants to drag on that side of the case. I think somewhere along the line someone put on on there that looks right cosmetically but has the wrong thread. It won't screw down but a turn and thus won't put tension on the spool shaft.
The tension nut on the other side would put the spool away from the casing either but I fashion a copper plate for it and dropped in. that side of the spool run sweet now.
Everything else in the reel is sound and with some fresh drag washers it'll be fine.
Any Ideas?

Rich: the problem you describe is usually due to wear on the spool spindle on that side, so that you can't make contact when you crank down the bearing cap and it thus rubs. I find this often on older Penn reels. A common way people took care of this was to drop a small ball bearing or wad of tin foil in the bearing cap to give the needed contact. The beads from a dog chain necklace are about the right size. I have also had a friend tig weld a little metal onto the end of the spool (sorry, Harvey...these are for putting back on the water), then shaping to taste. Ultimately, the answer is to get a new spool. Hope this helps!
So here's what I did
Thanks for the input mate.
For the tension cap on the left hand side of the reel I fashion a copper plate from a piece of 1" type m copper tubing to fit inside the cap and make a little difference on that side. On the handle side of the reel I took a piece of latago and cut a piece to fit inside the cap the leather was the touch that made the difference. The reel is fine now with the exception of the drag being a little grabby as it starts. I noticed that there is now fiber washer between the brass plate at the base off brake shaft and the main drive gear. Seems to me that one could be put in there and washers upgraded. I'll see what I can do with it. The reel has the feel of one that would serve well with 12lb mono.
