Info on small winchester reel needed

Post by Robin Sayler »

I have a chance to buy a small winchester model 1221 in the 40 yd size, looking at it i don't see how you could get 40 yards of anything but thread on it, Anyways i am looking for some info such as when is was made and what kind of price is a fair price, what to look for since i have never bought a reel quite like this before, and anything else you think i should know. Also it seemed like the reel had a permenent click?

Thanks Robin

Robin: The 1221 is only a 40 yard size reel. The 1221 was part of a series of reels was the least expensive single action reels manufactured by Winchester. The 21 series were nickle plated and have a permanent click. These reels appeared in Winchester tackle catalogs from 1923-1929. The last update I did for my Winchester price guide was 5 years ago, but I valued the 1221 in EX condition at $75.

Robin: one thing to remember is that early fly lines were usually made of silk and very, very fine. So 40 yards of silk fly line, without any backing, takes up a lot less space than, say, 40 yards of double-taper 5 wgt with 100 yards of nylon backing.

Younguy, Winchesters like yours have been selling from $56 to $145 over the last two years on ebay depending on condition, with almost all of them going for over $100.
