Research on Penn

I have acquired a couple of Penn catalogs and find them very informative. There is a bunch of information in the catalogs. I was thinking of ways to condense the information and allow quick reference. I decided to create a excel spread sheet showing the time line of Penn reels. Basically I put the catalog numbers (and dates of catalogs) across the top of the spread sheet. Down the side of the spread sheet is the name and number of the reel. I put the catalogs price on the corresponding block for each reel for a given catalog year. In a wink you can see when a Penn reel appeared on the seen or was discontinued. This definitely help with determining the age of a reel. To speed things up even more I use auto filter functions. This way I can isolate the information for a given series of reels like long beach or a given number like Penn reel 125. I have only imputed catalog 10,14,18,20,21,24b into the spread sheet. I am going to get more catalogs and impute the information. .

Good going - need to start somewhere. A fellow collector did something similar a while back for Pflueger casting and saltwater reels, listing them by name and description, then the years they appear in catalogs. If you care to take a look, it ran as a Reel News article in 1997 and then was reprinted in Pflueger Pfacts.

Penn catalogues eh?
I guess you are aware that a membership into ORCA gives you a chance to use our Library. There is a good number of Penn catalogues listed. Just contact your Librarian.
As Hank one said, "If you got the money honey, I'v got the time!"

PS: When your spreadsheet is complete, you can also DONATE a copy so others can benifit.

It is amazing how the information pops off the spread sheet. Even though I can not exactly determine age, I can determine a time frame for the existence of the reel or version of the reel. I was looking at the Penn beach master 155 and saw that the metal spool version was not in the 42 (10) or previous catalogs, but it was in 53/54 catalog and latter. Saves a bunch of time.

I am also working on other dating criterion. Like for instance when did pen switch from printing the yardage on the stand to putting the part number and when were they blank. Unfortunately I doubt Penn threw away all there parts one year and used all upgraded the next. They probably used up old stock until depleted and then went with newer versions. This would blur the years. However if enough of the dates of changes to the reel are known a date would be easier to find and more accurate.

One of the things I am looking for is the dates for the clicker buttons. I have found four types and there may be more. The types are; Domed, Cross hatched, Hexagonal W/pimple and round with pimple. It will take time but I will eventually know the dates of the clicker and about five dozen other changes on the Penn reels. But eventually I will know them.

Hello Nemo,

I need some info on a Penn reel I just purchased. If you are interested I will post pictures on the next thread. The reel is Penn Kingfisher. What is interesting about this old Penn is that it is built on the "Model K" Jacobs side plates. They are brown, three post bakelite plates. As far as I know this is also the only Penn model that does not have The word "Penn" anwhere mentioned on the reel but it undoubtably a early Penn. I would date the reel around 1936 because of the type handle.

Also, If you go to the Show and Tell section I posted a thread titled, "Someting I just picked up at the Allentown show". It is a post with photos of the "Penn Model F" I purchased in Allentown broken downed, cleaned, lubed and built up.
