Somehow this reminds of the "Pocket Fisherman".

What a find, Brian! I have a plastic rod/reel combo very similar to this, made by St. Croix. It's in the basement and I'll have to dig it out and get more details, but I think it's called the "Fishing Machine." Don't get me wrong, I think St. Croix makes great fly rods now, but this odd contraption, probably from the early 1960s, must represent a low point of clap-trap fishing devices, similar to the Pocket Fisherman. Must be somebody out there with a collection of these gadgets (and it would serve us skeptics right if that collector reeling in a big 'un right about now, with his nifty little Fishing Machine!).
Aloha, buddy!

I got mine ...

at a garage sale several years ago for a couple bucks. Didn't know what potential it had. Brought it home and stuck it between my Wordens Jet Caster Belly Reel and A-J Aircraft Co U-Reely. Guess I better show it some respect and move it up a shelf or two.

Don't forget Brian, it's Buy-One-Get-One-Free... Great deal! Wonder if they field tested it?
