Age of Penn reel
I have noticed that there is several distinctions on Penn reel that help you to determine age. I was wondering if those in the know could help out. I would like to know the start and stop dates if possible. I know there would be some bleed over in modification as stock was consumed. In the ball park is ok. I will only start with a few distinctions on early reels.
1.The maker mark on the right plate that says comes in several varieties. Here are a few distinct markings.
a.Across the center is says “Penn Senator patented d”, and curved around the outside is says “tackle manufacturing company Philadelphia Pa”.
b.“Penn”, “Senator” and “Paten d” written straight across
c.“Penn” written at angle to the words “senator” and “paten d”.
2. The line out alarm or clicker button.
a.Dome shaped
b.Round Waffle hatch pattern
c.Hexagonal w/coolie hat shape
d.Round coolie hat shape
3.Writing on parts like the stand
a.Yardage is written on the stand
b.No markings is on the stand
c.Part number is on the stand
4.busing (bearings) markings
a.Some bushings (bearings) have no markings
b.Some bushings (bearings) are marked with the word oil
c.Some bushings (bearings) are marked with the word oil and a part number.
I could really go on with this but will keep it brief for now. I have a list of thirty items like this.
Age of Penn reel
I'm pretty sure no one's done this kind of examination of Penn reels before and it looks like you just gotta get hold of the rest of those catalogs, roll up your sleeves and dive in yourself. Seems like you're already well on your way to doing some serious research. Can anyone else suggest where to look for this kind of information other than catalogs?

I was hoping for a handout on this one but I will eventually find out the info. Catalogs will be the best place. Reading forums like this you get nuggets of information and looking at boxed reels on fleabay helps from time to time with a nugget of info.

What kind of fish is that on your avatar? Looks like a spooler. Bet you need a big reel for that one. I even got a 30s Penn 9/0 recently but it is going to stay polished on the shelf.
