Bad Bob's "Thought for the Week"

Post by RAM »

NEVER underestimate the ingenuity of the criminal mind!

EVERY rare collectible of value has been conterfeited. Fine art of all types, porcelain, historical letters, stamps, coins, and old fishing lures are but a few examples.

Should we consider rare-and hence valuable-fishing reels to be exempt?

Bob,
As we all know, the most famous of the fakes is the Moscrops reel and that puts up a red flag very quickly. I would say in order to re-produce a quality reel for profit is almost impossible. Take into consideration the time and cost to jig up, lathe out and produce a good reel that would fool the masses.
I would more conserned about someone trying to re-produce another "Bad Bob". That would shake up the masses!

All seriousness aside Harv, what you seem to say is counterfeiting old reels can't logically be done strictly as a matter of economy of scale? That will eventually be easy to overcome. It would seem that the price escalation of rare reels just has to outpace the cost of tooling to build them. Bad Bob

PS Jack- A plastic replica of Bad Bob will be available at your favorite WalMart by early October. Check you local newspaper for details. It will, however, be rather easy to tell that it is merely a poor copy!

Bob,
Not that I don't think it couldn't be done, it just the fact that after a close inspection, I don't think you could fool guys like Vernon, Gast, Foster Gaustad and others with a fake Kentucky style reel. You might be able to pull the wool over the eyes of some with a hard rubber fly reel or a New York ball handle but I would bet there would be some questions that would hold the value of it down to those whom deal and collect that kind of reels. Could you sell a one-eyed pig to a blind man? Sure, but for you to reproduce a $5000.00 reel and run it thru someone like Langs, I am sure you woiuld get caught. I may be all wet but i doubt it.

IMHO, fakes made entirely from scratch are far less of a concern than reels with "highly questionable" marks or parts.
