When DId Union Hardware Start Making Reels?

Post by Teal »

Hi,

Just a question for pure curiosities sake. I ran across a Union Hardware ad from 1876 for roller skates; anyone know when they started to make reels? Was it before World War I?

Cheers,

Dr. Todd

Union Hdwe. reels?

Post by RAM »

Yo Todd-I am amazed no one has tried to answer your question about Union Hdwe. reels. Figured you would get swamped with replies. I checked Smith's book "Great Tackle Ads" and found none for UH. Also checked Munger's book. It pictured 3 reels, none of which looked ancient but one was a raised pillar Sunnybrook appearing to be possibly pre-WWI. He says they were founded in 1854, incorporated in 1864 (hmmm-same year American Fish Hook was founded). Karl White has a pic of a RP Sunnybrook that he dates to 1918. Hope this stirs up some comments from folks who really know what they are talking about. Once I leave Pfluegers I am generally lost. Bad Bob

"Union Hardware Co. of Torrington, Connecticut, began manufacturing fishing reels in 1923."
Jim Brown, A Treasury of Reels, Manchester, Vt.: The American Museum of Fly Fishing, 1990, p. 127. Jim is one of those "folks who really know what they are talking about."

Bob, superlative spelling. cool-thumb Dr. Todd, you're allowed one edit.
