Trivia question for the day

Post by RAM »

What city has historically had the most reel manufacturing companies?

PS- I'm here in Athens Georgia for the express purpose of determining once and for all whether Craig Barber has just been a cruel hoax and is actually former Senator Sam Nunn in disguise. Bad Bob

Assuming you're including film and tape, Rochester's probably in the running.

BTW, I think I saw Craig in the crowd watching the second ALCS game, sitting three rows behind some celebrity fan whose name I forget.

Ron-Don't think Redditch is correct. Steve-Film reels never entered my mind. Neither do movies. Last one I saw was 'Amadeus' back in aught ninety eight. (Did I spell that right? No dictionaries in this Athens close by) Even with film and tape reels Rochester wouldn't be correct. Bad Bob

I have never given it any thought, but my guess would be Brooklyn, NY.

Did I say I knew the answer? I think I do but not having my reference materials closeby can't be certain. Still, I feel confident no one has the correct answer yet. But hey, what do I know except that the answer is NOT Akron! Bad Bob

PS- I talked to a chap a few minutes ago who claimed to be Craig Barber. Said I could buy his lunch. Will let you know whether it is him or Sam Nunn in disguise.

'Amadeus'...great flick...one of the all-time best fart solos that has ever been recorded on film...not counting the guy on my college dorm floor.

re Reel City, I guess the cheatin way to figure this out is to go to Geezer's list of makers by State and see if the winner is obvious...but then, I'm much too lazy to do that.

It seems not enough of you guys out there in cyberland are willing to venture a guess much less who know the answer. Why assume it is a U.S. city? Redditch was close. Brooklyn had a bunch. But...

What about London? Prove me wrong. I've seen pages of reel and other tackle companies listed with London as an address. Any arguments welcome. When I get home I'll count them. Bad Bob

you said makers, which is not the same as merchants.

Ron-I said prove me wrong. You just made a statement that presumes there were more merchants of reels in London, but not more makers. What is the correct answer? I don't know. I still bet on London. They started long before we did in a serious way. How many companies in Redditch? Brooklyn? Let's put it this way- If ORCA members can't answer this question with authority, then who can? We should be able to answer this one! Repeat-I don't know but someone does.

you're probably right with London, but I wouldn't count a London maker established after 1850 - after then they're buying all their reels from Birmingham, Alnwick and Redditch.

I won't give up on this until I have assurance from someone that they have the correct answer. It is an important element of reel collecting lore we should all know. Come on guys and gals! Research the question and make us all the experts we're supposed to be! No hurry, just the facts! Bad Bob

You wrote the most reel manufacturing companies. Do you mean different reel companies or one company selling many trade reels?
