What exactly is a "gunmetal" finish?

Post by Farace »

I'm somewhat certain the gunmetal finish isn't a paint, but what is it? Plating? (If so, with what?) A treatment akin to bluing? (Which I seem to remember is some controlled form of rust, no?) What exactly is it?

Apologies if this is a dumb question . . .

no such thing as a dumb question.

yes, it is blueing. Use of a chemical oxidizer to put a dark patina on the metal surface.

Works pretty well on steel and copper alloys.
Much more difficult to get a good, resistant finish on aluminum - the difficulties ultimate lead - pun not intended since the old aluminum process was lead finishing - to the development of anodizing.

Farace-Several Pflueger reels were "gun metal finish". Examples: Progress, Seminole, Atlas. This was over brass. Didn't work all that well. Easily worn off it would seem. Others on request.

Ron Mc (Bass Fisherman Extraordinaire)-Farace's question was excellent. Of course there are examples of dumb questions. Like: "Isn't a preposition a word you can correctly end a sentence with?" Bad Bob

Ron, thanks for the explanation.

Bad Bob (maybe I'm Good Bob? naaah), I've got a Progress with the gunmetal finish (or what's left of the finish), and my Heddon 125 Imperial has that finish, too.

It was more of a curious question, since I doubt I'd ever attempt a refinish, but I realized I had no idea what the process was. Now that I know it's like blueing, I'm guessing that to do it properly, just like blueing, it's best done in hot tanks and not out of a bottle (if there even is gunmetal finish in a bottle). I'd imagine it's probably rather toxic, as well. Is there anything still offered in this finish? I think it's rather attractive (and glare-free). I guess the modern equivalent would be titanium coating?

The Hardy-era Orvis CFO fly reels were also described as having a gunmetal finish. Basically a dark gray with a bit of a shine to it. This color was also used on the Orvis Madison reels, which are really Pflueger Medalists.

Jerry, I did see that reel the other day when you posted it. It's a neat one, I like it.

Gadabout, thanks, I'll probably keep my eyes open in case I see those reels.
