Help from Ocean City Experts

Post by Tony Malatesta »

Hi Guys ! Finally got back on the site with the help of Phil White. Hopefully everything will be back to normal in the near future. Recently picked up a reel from Ebay and i need your opinions. Of coarse this might take a while as the site is a little screwy right now , but here goes.
Reel is not marked except with the # 250 on the bottom of the foot. At first i thought it was a salesman,s sample because of the clear coat sides , but now i,m not sure. On the top center of the face plate there is an American dime from 1946 presumably to identify the year it was made. Any way, if its not a salesman,s sample , then it is 1 of the best homemade pieces i,ve ever seen. Your opinion would be appreciated.

Seems like there were a few reels that appeared with some custom made plates. See these previous threads:

Clear Meisselbach

Unusual Montague

I would guess there was a pretty ambitious fisherman that wanted to repair some reels and had the access and know how for casting/finishing his own plates? I know several came from the same seller which is why I lean towards that theory.

Hi Brian! The seller of this reel is a 3000+ !00% feed back Ebay member by the name of David Gaustad from CA. Ring a bell? What would such a reel be expected to sell for. Just wondering if i over paid.

Yes, Tony, Dave is a friend and also an ORCA member. He is well known to a lot of reel collectors, probably around the world. In his former life, we'd get mile long lists of reels from him but now we have to slug it out with everyone online :D You might ask him but I believe these clear plated reels came from the same collector. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess as to their creation.

I'm sure the talented fellow who made your reel would come in handy with this one too:

Needy Cozzone

"overpaid"? Oh, I don't know...that's such a subjective term  . I think the phrase "what you should have paid" will eventually creep into this conversation. If I said I and 10 others would have payed 1/2 of what you ended up paying, who's to say you overpaid or 1/2 of that is what you should have paid? To me, it's what the price was at the time you made the commitment to buy it, auction or not, and you did buy it. If it's something you wanted and now enjoy, the term is irrelevant. When you think about it, maybe if people take the same approach on the other end, maybe "I undersold" wouldn't hurt so much!
