I am embarassed but ....

Post by orourke »

I have been perusing our web site and came upon the life members list. I smiled and noted each member's name seemed familiar to me.

Harveys passing hasn't been noted yet in his bio yet.

Then I read the name Michael E. Nogay. I find out he is the founder of our club and I didn't even recognize his name. I don't recall seeing any postings on the web site unless I don't know his moniker.

Is Michael still alive? still an active member?

The club was formed in 1990, is there any way I can find out how long I have been a member.

Actually I was going through the site to see how to add to my information in an avitar. Still looking for that.

Just a mid morning babble.

I believe Michael Nogay is still around but not sure if he's actively collecting reels.

I'll put this in a separate message for everyone but you can add an avatar by clicking on "Profile" in the menu above. You'll see instructions to help as follows:

Upload Avatar from your machine: (Will load an image you select from your computer to the ORCA Avatar Gallery)

Upload Avatar from a URL: (Will load an image you select from the internet to the ORCA Avatar Gallery)

Link to off-site Avatar: (Will link to an image you select from the internet)

Select Avatar from gallery: (You can add an image that has already been loaded in the ORCA Avatar Gallery - but beware, many are likely already taken or used previously)

*****Be careful to adhere to the 100 pixel x 100 pixel and 15 kb limit, otherwise your image may end up too big and take up too much space when postiing*******

Brian (or any other noted ORCA etymologist): How did the word "Avatar", which, according to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is defined as..."The incarnation of a Hindu Diety (as Vishnu)" come to its present usage by ORCA website users. Enquiring minds want to know.

I talked or emailed Michael about six months ago. Don't remember what the occasion was now, but he was still alive then. He was prez. the first time I joined.

Dave,
like Don, I have talked with Michael via e-mail a few months ago. Henry and I extended a personal invitation to the Lake George ORCA National this past year, and while he was hoping to make it, he wisely opted to spend time with the grandkids at a planned family event! I'm hopeful that we'll see him at an ORCA national very soon!

Bob:
Just use Google, and you'll learn that you can get the complete history of on-line usage of the term at Wikipedia:

Thanks Geez-There was an extensive article in our Sunday paper criticizing Wikipedia for acccepting any kind of trash you were willing to put into it. Says it is easy. Just ask John Seigenthaler (eminent Nashville editor and father of the chap who does the NBC Weeked Evening News) about the lies told about him there, which have never been properly expurgated.
I am sure most references there are valid. I use it more often than you would imagine (several times weekly), but not for word definitions. I prefer Webster's-far moe official, although street talk and e-jabber are so current the publishers need to put out a new edition every few months.
I don't plan to post an "Avatar" on the web site (or a small likeness of myself either). Just curious about such a strange word usage. Be assured, I will follow your advice and check it out.

Bad Bob (Obviously far behind the times. Cheers for the Hindu religion for sharing their vernacular with us reel collectors!

PS- I was born the year the Star Spangled Banner was officially named the National Anthem. Can you name the year without Googling it Geez? Since we are nearly the same age you are bound to guess within a year or so of the correct answer.

Old pic of Al-Back when he was president for a night. Or does that one go all the way back to when he invented the internet? He was young and svelte then. Too many "Global Warming Awareness Banquets" these days I suppose. Maybe he'll sweat it off when it gets hotter! Bad Bob
