This is the reason why I have to unload the SP prototype!

First model 1131 but the handle is on the "wrong" side. It could be the only one of these. I paid dearly and I'm still not sorry, but some reels I've been holding have to go. Wish I could make it to New York.

Jim--I`m sure you`re more experienced than I am, that 1131 sure looks
like the Shakespeare 'Perfect' CA 1910, and we do
know that Shakes. made most of SB`s reels being they made it for SB,
might be intentionally opposite placement. huh?

might be intentionally opposite placement.?

Your Lefty

Post by Len Sawisch »

Jim,

What am I missing here? Looks like a pretty standard early left handed 1131. I saw one before this sell on ebay in the $800 range (I remember cuz I bowed out just a wee bit before then). That one had a marked leather case but was otherwise like yours.

And Jack, you are right on target, as the 1910 Intrinsic and 1910 Pefect are hard to tell apart from the 1911 1131 (was that March 1st or January 3rd of '11?).

Jim I hope you've saved quality photos of that Shakespeare reel. It would made a nice article for The Reel News. It would sure make a Reel of the Issue, or would be worth an article on its own.

This is a first model lefthanded 1131 and the first South Bend lefty reel ever made. It's the same one Len is referring to also (and the case didn't come with it this time.) I tracked it for over a year and it was only let go during the recent lefty price surge. There's no reference to a lefthander in the 1911-1914 years anywhere. The serial number puts it near the end of the first model, and the company must have finally accepted a special order for a southpaw reel. Must have been a special client. The lefties weren't offered for the 1131A till years later. The first model was based on the Perfect/Intrinsic reel, and our friend, Harvey, will have to tell us if there was ever a lefty Perfect or Intrinsic that this would have been modeled after. If not, it would make this reel even more endearing. Sorry, I forgot that tongue-in-cheek doesn't come through well in writing. I'll put together an article on all the SB lefties in an article soon. I'll keep the photos of the SP prototype.

OK - so i WAS missing something! I am so gun shy after the Angler Scout Fiasco that I ran downstairs, got my Lefty 1131 off the shelf, kinda ran back up stairs and held it up to the picture to make sure I wasn't being an idiot again. But despite my best efforts, I missed the boat again!

Well, Bully for you, Jim! That is a once in a lifetime type reel and I am glad it is in the hands of someone who can truely appreciate it!

And speaking of Left-Handed stuff, I am pretty sure the "mystery" 1131 was an attempt by old man Heddon to pull South Bend's reel production away from Shakespeare. How does that grab you?

Heddon?

Post by Jim Madden »

By the crotch! It makes a heck of a lot of sense, though, given the love/hate relationship of those three. Why don't you post your reel and I'll post mine, and we'll see if there are some Heddon experts out there who will notice something familair.
As for the Scout incident, heck, that was one of the most entertaining things I've seen in a while - 'bout fell off my chair! It's usually me in goofy situations like that. Whenever it happens to one of us though, all we have to do is move your heading to the top again to make ourselves feel better. Thanks for the kind words on the reel.
