The hours and hours of searching "old fishing reel" on eBay pays off once in a while. Bidding on this reel started at $9.99 and there were only three bids placed. It is a marked Julius VomHofe fly reel No. 5. Too bad about the chip on the rim, but not bad for a $20.50 reel. I love the golden patina on the bone handle.

Nice story! I love when that happens.
Last month I found this one on FleaBay, it was listed as "Old Brass Reel With Wood Handle". This picture is from the auction listing:
This is my picture. The reel is aluminum with solid nickel silver hardware, turned pillars and the knob is hard rubber. This was the best $87.65 I've spent in ages ! I'm not sure of the maker, but it came out of Central Valley, so I'm thinking Mills may have had somehting to do with it.
