Is this reel worth anything?

Post by little joe »

While going through my dad's things. (He's deceased) I came upon a fly reel. It's an Ocean City "75". What does it mean and is it worth anything?

It seems he's had it as long as I can remember. I'm 62 yrs. It's mounted an a Montague split bamboo 9' rod.

OC 75

Little Joe,

Reel would have much more sentimental value than monetary to me. My reference books put it at about $20. Maybe $10 more if in box and very nice condition. I don't know much about them as far as age. Maybe a OC collector can give you better information. Hope this helps a little, Bill.

Thanks Bill, sentimentality is what it's all about. :)

Little Joe's reel

Little Joe,

I beg to differ with Little Bill. I believe that reel does have value. Can you tell me what if any markings it has?

Ocean City Reel

Little Joe:

I agree with Murray that the reel is worth something, and I doubt that it is an Ocean City. The only markings would probably be a patent date. That can be looked up in the patent book, and tell you exactly what it is. Andy

Murray & Andy: You guys are confusing the photo that Bill Land posted next to his message (Bill needs to resize that photo) with the Ocean City mentioned in the original post. The Ocean City is not that JVH patent reel.

Just so we keep things straight, it is potentially a Edward Vom Hofe patent. I'm not sure about the confusion on the pictures, all I saw was what looked like a first click.

Murray,

The picture was just my profile picture of one of my own reels. It was to the left of my response. My response was to the author of this string, Little Joe, who was asking about an Ocean City fly reel. Little Joe never included any pictures. Sorry for the confusion. I removed my image until I can figure out how to reduce it to a less confusing size. Bill.

I think some of you guys got derailed somewhere along the way.

The original question was: Is an Ocean City Model 75 fly reel worth anything.

The answer is: Yes, about $10 on a good day.

Dean.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to cause so much trouble. However, I do thank all for the help and fearlessness to provide information.
Because of the sentimental value, I'm going to mount rod and reel on my rec. room wall.

Thanks again. Little Joe

The reel may not be worth much money wise but the rod MAY be another story altogether!
What is the model # or name on the rod?I've seen Montague split bamboo rods go for a pretty penny. If it is a S.B. rod it may not be the smartest thing to do hanging it.The silk threads and perhaps the bamboo will deteriorate at an excellerated rate due to pollutants and sunlight etc.
Reply with the mod. # etc and I will find out for you.
