As many of you might be aware, Idaho is on fire. We currently have 17 fires burning in the state. The largest fire in the nation this summer was on the southern border of the state and in Nevada. This fire was over 1000 square miles in size and consumed lots of grass, juniper and sage. It is the home of many ranches that have existed for over a century.
When this fire started, from a group of lightning strikes, a bunch of ranchers gathered with bulldozers and heavy equipment ready to contain the fire. They were told by the BLM that they had to stay out of it. It is now a federal requirement that "a qualified bulldozer supervisor be present to coordinate safety and fire communication."
Meanwhile the blaze grew until it took over a week to contain (They are mopping up now) and has cost over $9,000,000. It reminds us of the day we drove by a small fire in Yellowstone Park and noted a group of rangers standing there watching it burn. After it burned much of Yellowstone they decided that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to let 'em burn.
Your government at work.
