The barn that is silhouetted in the breaking sky was built in 1875. There was a ferry across the river at this pool which took miners to the gold mines about 20 miles south of this spot. The ferry owner ran a stagecoach to the mines. In the early 1900s some fishermen wrote of climbing into the cupola on the top of the barn to spot sturgeon in the hole. There were sturgeon caught up to 12-13 feet in that pool.
Not all river smallies are lean and mean:

I caught this fish yesterday. It was 18" long, but I'd guess it could have weighed 4 pounds. It came out from the bank in about 3' of water and took the plastic frog shown. It put up a terrific fight, jumping three times, and is now back in his spot, waiting for me to return.
