From everything I've been able to find, the "Garcia" name etching on the 300 began around 1957. Before this, the yellow label was attached. Does anyone know any more about dating these yellow labels.
Also, when did the red metal "Garcia" label begin use?
All help is appreciated!
Randy
Transitional yellow "A Garcia Product" label.
I have a 300 with the yellow sticker.
I have been told that the yellow sticker was used for only one year. I believe it was 1957. The sticker was commonly removed by the consumer. So if you have one with the sticker consider yourself fortunate. I am sure that others on the site are more informed than I am on the history of these reels.

Hi Randy. I see this discussion is about a year old and didn't get too far.
As far as I can tell, "A Garcia Product" sticker first appeared around 1954 on the Mitchell (pre-300). The sticker was a black and silver boomerang shaped sticker. This is a very difficult find and was only available for a short time. Next appeared the yellow and black boomerang shaped sticker. This sticker was the most common sticker seen on these reels from that point and can be found on reels up to those that were engraved "Garcia Mitchell 300", up until about 1959. But periodically these reels can also be found with a yellow and black oval sticker instead, and rarely an upside down crescent shaped yellow and black sticker (normally seen on the 304 or 314 round bodied reel-this was also around '54-'55).
I believe the red Garcia stickers first appeared around 1963 when the new midnight blue series of reels appeared. All known authoritative sources I have seen indicate 1963. Of course The Mitchell Museum website says both 1963 and 1961. Which does one believe? Dan

Dennis Roberts included a 1959/60 reel that has both the typical chevron shaped sticker & Garcia engraved on it, he also mentions there were white stickers.
Also note that there have been a variety of different shape Garcia stickers, but none I've seen are truly "oval" or elliptical. What's being passed off as a continuously curving "oval" are presumably the 'rounded bar' shaped stickers. Essentially the long straight top & bottom of a rectangle w/semicircles rounding each end.fishawks wrote:This sticker was the most common sticker seen on these reels from that point and can be found on reels up to those that were engraved "Garcia Mitchell 300", up until about 1959. Jerry, it sure is great fun finding those reels with the stickers. I am always interested in better techniques on how to clean those stickers of old dirt and grime, without ruining them. I am open to suggestions here.
I have not seen a white sticker to this point, except if the reel was left out in the sun and the yellow bleached out. I would like to see a truly white sticker.
I think the terms describing the shapes of the stickers found on The Mitchell (300) reels are generally well understood by Mitchell collectors and were picked for simplicity sake, though imperfect in description. Perhaps there needs to be some perfectly correct terms coined so that the description fits to a tee. Dan

I have never seen a white and black sticker either. There is another odd shaped sticker I know of, I will not even try to describe it. Jan has one on his webpage http://www.werpmolens.nl/ . It is affixed to a 1955 302 Saltwater reel in the reel collection section.
Re: Transitional yellow "A Garcia Product" label.
Hi Randy, The yellow arch/boomerang sticker continued for a short while after Garcia's name was engraved, probably to help in advertising and get rid of old stock. I agree with Dan on the black/silver sticker being the first but if I may elaborate; these stickers are very hard to find due to a very short run in 1953/54. All of these were placed on the 300 series with only 5 digit numeric (only) serial numbers and naturally bound for America at the time.ran10 wrote:From everything I've been able to find, the "Garcia" name etching on the 300 began around 1957. Speculation; Garcia quickly realized the black/silver sticker (I think the best looking one they made) was hard to see so they went yellow. To this day, yellow is known to draw more attention, the uglier the better. I guess taxi cabs are the best example.
Now, between the first and last stickers there were two times I know of where they changed to the yellow oval sticker. These seem to correspond with the other series Mitchell reels but for now I have to proof. To answer your question; I don't believe there is a safe way to date any these based just on an advertising sticker other than the black/silver.
I also agree with Dan on the first use of the red Garcia wedges on the 400 series but according to record, 1961 would be more accurate for the VERY first. Wallace
