Thanks Jan- I figured it was a situation like that but I had a hard time picturing the connection.
I once had an ultralight Shinmano spinning reel that came in a kit with a special rod (probably still have it in the garage somewhere). It had a normal looking spinning reel seat but with the addition of a screw that connected into the rod handle.
