My New Reel Display Cabinet

Post by Steve K »

Hi and Happy Holidays! :D
I just wanted to show off my new reel display cabinet that I had custom built for me this past week.

I work for a non-profit organization in North Carolina that provides education, employment and enrichment services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. We have a furniture making business on the side, (Just Plain Country), which makes country primitive furniture. We use the revenue from his business to enhance the services we provide to the people we support. (This strategy allows us to rely less on government for our funding)
See following link for more information on the wonderful organization that I work for: www.lifespanservices.org :D
Website for Just Plain Country is: http://www.justplaincountry.com/

Regarding my reel cabinet...I had been outgrowing my current display cabinet/shelves and decided to opt for a custom designed cabinet to display my reels. The standard step-back hutch was too need and I had my piece scaled back to a thinner profile, and had the glass doors piece go down to the base section. I also had it designed so you can take the upper glass section off and use it as its own display cabinet if I wanted to.

Regarding the reels in the cabinet...The bottom 3 shelves are all Julius or Edward Vom Hofe reels...(In fact, all but two are JVH's), the top shelf is a mixture of primarily salt water reels...Cozzone, Montague, and Yale. (Mainly Montague)

BTW...Still looking for an old reel with a Blackburn Drag to add to my collection...

Thanks and Happy Holidays :D

A neat piece of furniture. The old green finish adds much to it. Thanks.

Nice cabinet Steve. I think I was with you when you pruchased that glass minow trap on top. It reminded me I still have to send you a handle nut.

Don...You are correct. That was the minnow trap I won at the CATC show auction this past October in Southern Pines.
Thanks for remembering the handle nut as well. Also...any ideas/luck yet on the possibility of replacing the swedged bearing cap? That filed cap is more of an issue than the filed handle collar on that reel.

Jack...Thanks for the positive feedback on the cabinet. I was very pleased. They basically took my concept and built it for me.

Brian...We do ship, and I would love to volunteer to hand deliver it to Hawaii  , Seriously, if you are looking at an item, we should be able to get you a quote.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all from 65 deg and windy Greensboro!

Nice cabinet and nice collection.

What is the tall fly reel in the middle of the second shelf?

Tall reel in middle.

Post by Steve K »

Dean:
The taller raised pillar fly reel in the middle is marked on the face plate Dame Stoddard & Kendall Boston, and has the typical 1/8 inch diameter hole drilled in the center/bottom of the reel foot. The reel foot is also marked 2/00 on the bottom side. It is nickel-plated brass and a very heavy reel for it's size.
Thanks for looking.
