A little reel

Post by Bettamuse »

Hi all,
I’ve always admired the beautiful craftsmanship that goes into the making of some fishing reels.
Personally I like the “making do” reels that someone hasn’t been able to afford the real thing so they have made their own. These often show a great deal of ingenuity at getting around having to use specialty parts.

I found this reel in a box of rubbish at the garbage dump.
It’s all brass and has no maker’s marks or stamps on it at all.

Any thoughts about it would be appreciated.

A guy I knew found a small tackle box while he was dumping his garbage. Inside were 2 Meek reels, 1 Heddon Dowagiac Underwater in picture box, an empty box for same lure, Heddon Dowagiac surface casting bait (slopenose) in picture box, Rhodes Perfect Minnow in box, and a bunch of other junk like that.

Several years ago I wrote an article about the stuff I bought from a guy who saw his neighbor cleaning his house and throwing stuff in a dumpster. A Hardy Reel, Y&E, and several NIB Al Foss 1st version Little Egypt lures.

I think until the recent interest in tackle collecting most older fishing tackle went to the dump. Probably up until the 1990s.

Unfortunately as the reel has no markings I have no idea how old it is, who made it or where it was made. These are the tantalising snippets of info that I’d love to know about its history.

I have actually seen someone clean out their late fathers home and shed by filling the fathers aluminium boat with all the contents of the shed and anything else they could stuff in, drive to the dump and just unhook it and drive off, just to sell the house as fast as possible.
They had not interest in who their father was or the 60 years of life and loves collected in the shed.
