I purchased a spinning reel at a yard sale but cant get a handle on what it is. It is black, single knob (bakelite maybe), has an orange label that says RU-SPORT, if the whole label is present. The open face has a 3 prong star in it. There is a single finger for drawing in the line and a crosshatch pattern around the spool. It is stamped pat.pend. usa-depose-made in france. The only other marking appears to be 4 (g?).
There is a round knob for changing reel direction. Does this describe a great find or just an average reel.
JCD, The reel you have is French and was made around 1949. They are fairly common but still a good find. Value is around $50 in mint condition. If you like spinning reels Ben Wright has a great book on spinning reels with lots of info including a history many of the manufacturers of spin reels, models, and a value guide. At the back of the book are many black & white pictures of spin reels. You can contact Ben at:
