TESTAMENT TO PARTS INTERCHANGEABILITY OF PENN REELS

Post by m3040c »

Sometimes I get to thinking about how new reel models come into being. Maybe this is one of the ways.

The reel on the left is a old Penn Longbeach 68 narrowed with the parts from the Penn Senator 4/0 on the right. If you take the spool and bars from the 4/0 and add a Squidder 140 stand to the Penn 68 sides, you get a Penn Longbeach 4/0.

Now, if you take leftover parts from the Penn Longbeach 68, add a Penn 113HLW chrome stand to the 4/0 sides you get another new model. A Penn Senator 68.

I thought I would throw on the optional Penn power handle on the new model Penn Senator 68 just for a different touch.

That is rather neat!

I have a bunch of old penns that I consider using the good parts to restore a better reel. Do most screws interchange? Is there a listing of spools, cross bars, feet, etc that will interchange?

Hello Mike,
The only information I know of is in the Penn catalogs . They list all the different models and their part numbers. If you were to use the parts from different models that have the same part numbers they will interchange. I.e. A 29 M -100 spool will fit a#100 , #180 , #185 , #190 , If they are from the same era the reel will hold its originality.
If you wanted to build HOT ROD REELS then you might have to build it to your own design. Some of the ORCA members may like to share information or SHOW & TELL their HOT ROD REELS they have built to help you , if that is what you are after.

Nice to see this posting brought back. Penn's interchanges are many. Coronado's fit Surfmaster frames, Live Bait Casters are Jigmasters without the breakdown feature, Squidders can be swapped into different configurations between their sizes or Surfmaster side plates can be added to Squidder frames. I really could go on for many reels. The way Penn built their reels was designs leading to more designs. The reels grew off each other and shared many parts.

If you go to: http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif?htm and click on www.pennparts.com you will find all the Penn schematics with part numbers. It is the ultimate interchange list and will provide you with a world of interchange information by comparing one reel to another within his site. Once you get used to using his info you can check out many Penn reels and how they relate to each other. If you put a part number into the search window, it will tell you what reels that part can be used on. Have fun creating the new Penn Longbeach 4/0 and Penn Senator 68 as I did or any other combination you can make work.

Great News & Thanks!

Thanks a ton! Winters can be long here in MO and I enjoy tinkering with reels that we typically don't have here in the midwest.
