Vintage Mitchell 300

Post by Rick F »

Here is a collector's item: Mitchell 300DL, June 17, 1974 edition. Very rare, this reel was given to me by my father-in-law after he had displayed it. It was never used. Still has the original wooden box and extra spool.

Are you still married and is your father in law still alive? If yes to either I'd wait until the answer to at least one question is different.

Great advice, my father-in-law has passed and my wife went to get insurance on it. That's when we found out that it is valuable.

RicK, I've always heard Langs Auction's produce the highest prices. You can check out the Langs Store at www.langsstore.com.

You can email Jim (one of our members who works for Langs) at or catch him by phone at 315.841.4623. He can tell you how to go about consigning to either the next auction or about putting it in the Langs Store.

Good luck.

How did your father come across something so special?

All about who you know. He was a friend of one of the executives in the NY/NJ area. He was a diehard Yankees fan who was friendly with the Ralph Houk, Enos Slaughter etc. crowd. He did a favor for this guy and in return he got the reel.
You should have seen his Yankee/baseball memorabilia collection! All his Yankee stuff was bought by a former Yankee player who shall remain nameless(he did play 3rd base however). He wouldn't touch anything that wasn't Yankees so I have left in my possession a 1958 ball signed by the entire Red Sox team with Ted Williams signature on the sweet spot!

Fleabay has an even more desireable, early version, Mitchell 300DL, in mint condition, w/BuyItNow price of $1200! It will be interesting to see if anyone steps up to the bat.

While I would like to add a 300DL to my extensive Mitchell collection, its never been a high priority to me. I'd sooner have an early Half Bail pre-300 w/round knurled AR knob. For me the minty Salt Water (pre-302) Half Bail I acquired is "the centerpiece" of my collection. I'm also particularly fond of the "very rare" 1st version Full Bail Salt Water reels I've found. By way of comparison, 300DL reels show up quite regularly.

Araye-
The reel is a 300DL June 17, 1974 edition--25 made.
I did a history search and could not locate a June 17, 1974 300DL on ebay...

Mitchell 300 DL

Post by Outtie61 »

I have a Mitchell 300 DL in showroom condition with the box that I will have to consider selling at some point. Sadly its box no longer has the plaque on it.

Seeing this and seeing the EBay reel (anyone know if this fellow got the $1200) sold the reel posted? Just curious.

Have you seen this web link:

This is a credible web page that provides excellent background about the rarity of this reel. Only about 25 of with a June 17th date were ever produced.

Thanks- I did see this when I started my initial search of information. The reel is presently up for sale and I have had some pretty interesting offers.

Why sell NOW??

Post by SWIM JIG »

:o :? :!: :?:  :type: usa , rick, I just checked Ben Wrights book, the 2002 and 2006 , he has the reel listed as A Commerative modle as june 17, 1974 which was the day the garcia became the principal owner of Mitchel in France! ) and yours is a first day reel)! The book dosent say anything about a wooden box? I trust Ben will set this reel stright! as In MY OPINION you have one very hard to find item! It dosent say how many were made! there was a 2nd version made and has a 3 prong drag knob and a single post anti rev lever and were made for the U.S. andCanada and the U.K. markets only, that was in 1975-76) its also got a star for raity! ( I would place your reel as worth more than my proto type reels I have! It would be a nice reel to see how it got into the states! As its been said, Langs most likly be the only state side auction house to trust on that reel! Col. Milton lorens aka swim jig in ohio

Swim Jig,
Thanks for the information, my limited research turned up the same. I have had one collector look at it for appraisal (insurance) purposes. You ask "why sell now"? I am not a collector and have no children to pass it down to so it sits in my safe. That being said I put it on the market, although not real aggressively, to see the interest and to get an idea of what it will sell for. I understand that in the future it will be worth more but so won't everything else. If the right price comes along and it ends up in someone's collection I will let it go. I will hold until spring before I look at the auction route.

Thanks,

Rick
