Thomas J Conroy Reel

Post by Brookie »

Hello: Brookie here, I am a new member, and found your site some time ago, so I had some time today and thought I would join. I am not a big collector, just an old fisherman who has enjoyed the sport for a lot of years. Anyhow, this is my prize reel, which came to me via my father in law some years ago. The reel has some family history as the purchaser bought the reel from the store on Fulton Street and back in the 1900s he was quit the fisherman from what I am told and was related to my father in law. Anyhow the reel was in my father in laws possession from the 1940s and it appeardto have been used very little over the years.

Its a Thomas J Conroy with 1885 patent with Thomas J Conroy Makers NV and Julius Vom Hofe mark inscription. On the opposite plate its inscribed with "Silver King" and is marked on the foot 4/00. The reel measures 4/1/4" by 2 3/4. Last year I disassembled the reel and did a very light cleaning and found both side plates were etched with a #2 on the inside. Maybe the craftsman marked the plates before assembly?

Anyhow the reel seems very well made and put together.

Thought you gentlemen might enjoy the picture

All the Best

Brookie.

Very nice reel. Other angle shots would be great.

A few more pictures

Thanks for the welcome gentlemen: Here are a few more shots of the reel, its sort of fun photographing these reels. I posted a shot of the sideplate where I found the numbered etching. Its the same on the inside of the other plate.

Someone might know more but I suspect this might be a salmon reel with the heavy triple holed foot. Seems pretty beefy and stout to my un trained eye.
