I presume the hollowed out area is for a radio-controlled hand grenade. Never misses! They also make good ballast while waiting. Let us see how the finished produck looks! Bad Bob

Robin...the ducks would need binos to spot that flock! This is hopefully going to grow up to be a lure some musky would munch rather than a full-sized decoy...about 5-6 inches long at present. BB---hollow inside is where you keep your car keys :D

Very nice time lapse of making a duck. I havn't the time or space to make decoys/lure's. It all looks so much fun. John , have you made lure's before if so, I'd like to see some pics of them. Very curious to see how you make them.

Reelman1988, Do you duck hunt? you only live an hour or so south of me if you do or want to we should get together either down there or up here and go hunting. I'll even bring a few reels along for when they stop flying.

Hey Reelman1988 -- John

If you think this Decoy and Lure carving that John Elder does is really something -- you need to sweet talk him into posting pics of some reels he has made from wood (exterior & interior parts including gears!) A few years before you came on the board -- he made a few -- unbelievable talent.

It has been reported that the Good Doctor Vom Elder, is in the process of patenting an entire line of wooden (organic) reels to include, conventional, HD salt, fly, and casting.

I don't believe he has over 600-700 hours in each one. In his tax bracket -- that's about $14,000 apiece -- depending on the type of exotic wood, of course.

John E. -- Show us some pics!

With Best Regards, Fred

Here's an example of John's work that sits with great pride in my collection. It is a Meisselbach Surf #50 and is shown next to the genuine article.

Well, thanks for the pats, guyz...just wish I could live up to about half of it. Now, I'll have to make this freaking duck fly after all that promo...didn't mean to have it go that way...just thought it might be a fun exercise...I'll be back with more (or less) duck shortly...just had to finished hollowing him out and get him glued back together so I can do some more shaping...and yes, Don...osage orange off the beach in TX, thanks to Gerry Garrett!

Hello John,

That's a neat Duck but where are you going to fit the Free Spool Lever and the Drag assembly? I guess the hidden spool goes in the cut out. :)

Mike...I like your plan better than mine...now, that could be a fun reel! Here's a little movement on Ducky:

Image

Image

Time to get ready for eyes, although don't want to put them in til I'm done with finishing:

Image

gotta see if I can give this fellow some feet...still deciding whether I want to try and make them move. Will also have to figure out best way to add hooks:

Well, I tried adding feet made from black walnut...trouble was, it looked about as silly as feet on a duck...this idea was one whose time had NOT COME!

Image

So...off to Plan B...cut off feet, added hooks, eyes, finish...signed it in what I decided was the most appropriate region...for better or worse, we done: "Duck ala Osage Orange"

John:

Never saw one of these on The New Yankee Workshop. Norm would be impressed!

Thanks for the show. Beautiful job.
