Pflueger Akron w/surprise drag

Post by Araye50 »

Slim pickens on this Saturday's yardsale/fleamarket tour. Only thing I couldn't live w/o was a Pflueger Akron w/a handle drag. Hadn't looked too closely at others before, but this 1 seemed different, I'd thought the drags modified an existing chrome handle. This 1 has a slightly larger aluminum handle, stamped P inside & on each knob rivet head, looks Pflueger, but only says 'patented'. May just be later Akron than most I've seen, has metal bearings, no 'ruby' jewels, like ones I own.

The drag is seized up & upon trying to dismantle it I realized its also a 'push button' handle disconnect! Had never noticed this extra feature & it works fine. Press to cast, the handle doesn't spin, turn the handle & its clicks back in gear. Do not have a thin wall socket to dismantle this interesting handle drag. Left it soaking, looks like 'white rust' performing better than any adhesive.

Cleans up nicely, just a couple of scratches & obviously seldom used. Not really my flavor, but when the dealer said $6 I was obligated to haggle & make an offer-$5? Also got 2 numbers, 1 to a potential old reel Motherlode "West of St. Pete".

Was this Pflueger trying to compete w/Ambassadeur 5000?

:) 8) :!: :?:  :type: jump usa , OK , you gota be very careful when taking these apart, If you will email your address (I have it here somplace) so re email me I will send you a copy of the factory manul on this reel! yes you will need a thin wall socket, I use 1/4 in drives and grind down the outer wall untill it fits into the recess and on the nut! note this nut is thin and will distort very easy! The 49112 crank washer ie drag washer gets very brittle so generaly it breaks! new old stock ones are availible (we have them) Note the reseced screw just below the top head plate screw! when you take that big screw out, you should have a spare pawl in the inside of the screw cap! This reel in my thoughts are like a small PENN and are very common on lake Erie! Chek the bering caps are the agget inserts or just metal / also inside them is a felt washer that holds oil! I have over 80 of these and have 25 set up for fishing! In my thoughts they are a nice reel to use than the 510 Pfluger Supreme, You got a bargin, now take good care of it! Col. Milton lorens aka swim jig of a darn cold and Snowy OHIO! just a bit of History, 7dec 1941 on a Sunday, and in Ohionit was a lot warmer that Sunday, The Jappinese Started WORLD WAR 11 against these United States Of AMERICA! I remeber it WELL!

Milt, I got the handle drag on the Pflueger Akron No. 1885 freed today. I searched through my entire range of sockets & only got close. Realized I could back off drag, flex the aluminum handle to attack the 'white rust' seize. Used a hunk of scrap leather to pad plier jaws & tweaked the handle blade at it's sides. Finally got it 'apart' w/o even loosening the diffcult nut.

The metal bearing caps were dry as a bone, probably never seen oil since the early 60's & now the low mile Pflueger glides on fresh oil again. It'll be a long time before the spare pawl will be needed. The level wind worm looks unused. Just a few small chrome blems, still a gem. Must have over a dozen of this size Pflueger, my favorites are Summits, but I haven't fished 1 since I was a kid.

I've about come full circle on this reel in terms of taking "good care of it" & had my fun. Anybody need a Pflueger Akron No. 1895 like this? Will entertain offers/trades.
