Anyone familiar with (Gadabout) Gaddis?

Post by FSREPAIR »

I recently purchased an Old Pal Gadabout Gaddis spin reel and have been trying to figure out if there is a connection between Roscoe Vernon "Gadabout" Gaddis and Old Pal. I found a website with info on Gadabout Gaddis and found he was a salesman for Shakespeare, a well know fly fisherman, had a radio show, and did fishing programs on TV. Am I barking up the wrong tree in seeing a connection between Vernon Gaddis and a spin reel with two Old Pal Gadabout Gaddis decals on it? Thanks for any help or info. Randy

Hmmm, so you're the one who won that reel huh? I am an avid Gadabout Gaddis fan and collector. The Old Pal reel is the first one I've seen.

There have been several products with the Gadabout Gaddis signature. A series of Harnell rods and some lures made by Boone come to mind.

During his 1960's TV series, the majority of the tackle he used was Shakespeare. A few other products would occassionally get used like the aforementioned Harnell rods, Pflueger Medalists, Hardy fly reels, some Penn reels.

Does the Old Pal reel look like a quality product? It was kind of hard to tell from the eBay photo.

If you have any further Gadabout Gaddis questions, please feel free to ask.

Old Pal Gadabout

Rob,

Thanks for the info. Yes the Old Pal Gadabout Gaddis is a high quality Italian made reel and the only one I have seen also. I recognized the body style when I saw it and it is the same size as the Old Pal Cougar 600, which is also an Italian reel. Ben Wright has valued the Cougar 600 at $175 in his latest book. If it can find confirmation that this model was actually endorsed by Vernon Gaddis I would imagine the value to be significantly more. The mechanical condition of this one is M/9+ and appearance wise A/8. It has a silver cup and aqua colored spool and drag knob, which is different than the other Italian made Old Pal reels, which commonly have blue cups and charcoal colored spools and drag knobs. Rob if you email me I will email some better pictures of the reel. My email address is:
