Well, Bud did it again...found another interesting reel! More a user than a collectable, but a pretty nice reel. I haven't really seen any of these around...lots of spinning, but not many trolling reels...anyone know any details about these?
Does anyone know the skinny on the 'A' and 'C' settings on the (presumed) clicker?
apparently, you are not alone, based on the underwhelming response to the post. I'm guessing our Furriner Friends could add something...my guess is that as with many others, the dominance of Pfl, OC, and then Penn pretty well shut the door on saltwater casting/trolling reels. Shakes and Heddon tried and gave up pretty quickly. I'm betting DAM just marketed in Europe with these and this one just happened to wander over here.
Thanks, Todd...and yes...Mitchell...described to me by an antique dealer as the "White" Penns ...they did pretty well and you see quite a few out here...never have taken off as a collector reel.
the reel on the picture is made by Penn but sold by DAM Quick in Germany called Ocean 4040.
Two different versions were available for sale. First version with leather part attached, second without. DAM sold many Penn reels in that time and all others only had the DAM sticker on the factory boxes, the Ocean 4040 is the only original Penn reel with DAM marking.
usa jump Just a few i have worked on, they are TANKS! the #2 ring 600, the 34 Ring 600, the 1090/1120 and the 1040/1060! these reels have a drag plate similer to a FIn NOR reel, As for parts etc, these reels are embelished with a lot of parts and these are rather expensive! I belive Dick Janak Of New Platz New york may have some parts for them, My suply is very slim! In having them down and seeing the workings, its doubtful other makers reels could land a larger fish like these reels can! These reels are not seen in the average USA trade ,Rob Allen in Florida may have some or knows where some are at! Good hunting for you people on the Sea coast of on the BIG ISLAND of HI! home to Brian! Col. Milton lorens aka swim jig of a cold OHIO!

I hope your still a member of this board and I know this is an old post but can you tell me what you know about this Dam Ocean 4040 reel you say was made by Penn ? Any body else ever heard of this reel and it's association with Penn ? Thanks ! John Taylor
Butch
I picked this one up off eBay haven't got it yet but I agree they don't look much like a Penn. I found a website but all in German but says made from 1958 to 1967 with two different models the one I got has a leather thumb brake. John Taylor
