NY fishing licenses
NY fishing licenses
Was wondering if anyone could tell me when New York State stopped using the buttons as fishing and hunting licenses. Thanks.
They didn't use buttons back in 1972 when I purchased my first license. I believe it was in the mid 60's but not sure of the year. I've seen buttons over the years but never paid too much attention to the years on them. Should interesting finding out and you couldn't have come to a better place. Good luck in your search...

While enjoying the great weather today in upstate NY I went to a Flea Market. I met a gentleman that was selling quite a few New York Fishing and other buttons. I asked him when and how long the buttons sere used. He said from 1917-1941 Fishing buttons were used. It varies slightly for Hunting and Trapping but not much. Hope this helps you some. I also asked for his business card in case any one out there are interested in purchasing these buttons. Price range $20-40. Don't know if prices reflect current market conditions but I'll let you be the judge. Posy a reply and I'll get back with you. Tight lines.

1917 was the first button, it was Hunting & Trapping. 1917 & 1918 have screw thread posts on the back rather than pins.
They did not have buttons for 1922 and 1923.
The buttons returned in 1924, and in addition to Hunting and trapping, they also issued a guide badge that year.
1926 Was the first year a badge was required for fishing, and a Hunting, Trapping, and Fishing badge was issued. It was the first year when NY residents had to have a license for sport fishing. Non residents had to buy a paper license as early as 1910, you also had to have a license for certain fish nets, spears, and commercial fishing.
1941 was the last year badges were issued for New York.
The information above is from A Guide To Collecting Hunting and Fishing Licenses of New York State by David Hunt, 1995. Unfortunately it is out of print.
One word of caution, there are many fake licenses out there, including some NY. So far most of the fakes I have seen were pretty obvious, in person, but they are getting better. Some of the fakes could easily fool someone if they were buying from a photograph on the net.
I show some of the real, and fake licenses on the following page:
License Information
There also are some links there to my North Carolina Badge collection, some info on Field & Stream badges, and etc.
