Lest We Forget

Post by Don Champion »

Tomorrow is Dec. 7 "A day that will live in infamy". When you think of it, think of our vets who served shortly after that.

Here are a few of those vets. This is the medical staff at Fukuoka Camp # 7, sometime between late 1944 and the end of the war (plus a captor). My uncle, a doctor, is seated second from left.

Finding this photo on the Internet recently was a great shock, even though we knew Uncle Sid had been a POW.

Remembering the violence of that day in 1941 and those that gave their lives during it and as a result of it for many years later. My ancestors lived through that day but many others did not and they are on my mind. I see the harbor, the Arizona Memorial and other sites that were attacked often and sometimes fish at Kaneohe Marine Corp Base Hawaii. So many reminders all over the place.

A couple of things I have, two Pflueger reels engraved "Tuck Lee" - an Atlapac and a Templar, are giving me the suspicion that they are connected. Harry "Tuck Lee" Pang was a 30 year old Federal fire fighter that died in the attack. It would make sense that they were his, given his well paying job and age. No proof, just a hunch or maybe wishful thinking. I have no idea where they came from, maybe one day, maybe never. Either way, they bring to mind some pretty strong images.

Steve, your uncle is wearing on his feet what we wear to go fishing. They are called "Tabi". Then they probably had rubber tire tread on the bottom but today they have felt or metal spikes.
