Deviations on the Meisselbach Sealine 75

Post by john elder »

The Sealine 75 on the left is one I have that, based on Phil's book, is a pre-1935 model. I've seen 3 of these, including one from Bud Chaddock that I reported on a couple years ago. Bud just recently found the one on the right. it seems to be a transition model in that the post-1935 reels changed from that unique thumb screw-type drag to a star drag and presumably to the quick release faceplate, facilitated by the screw in the lower part of the faceplate. As can be seen, this one still has the thumbscrew drag but also has the quick release faceplate. Phil..are we showing you anything new or are there any more bits to fill in re the history of this neat reel?

John, all the examples that I have use the quick release thumbscrew. Between the Sealine and the New Neptune (which uses the same drag handle) I've seen several different handles with counterbalance weights or without, etc. Living in Idaho I really don't get to see enough salt water reels to accumulate much information. Unfortunately, these later reels were not serial numbered to clarify the evolution.

I am currently finishing up the salt water section of my Meisselbach website and should post my Ohio designed salt water reels tomorrow.

Nice site, Phil, with great pics. Then it would seem that the reels that Bud and I have that lack the quick release feature are tougher...or at least earlier...there must have been a period at the beginning before they made them quick release.

I just finished a restoration on a pre 1935 Miesselbach SeaLine 75. The spool suffered from some verdigris and linen lining fusing to the spool arbor. I gave the spool a 1 hour soak in diluted HCL, followed by a 15 minute stint in the sonic cleaner. The entire reel was disassembled, and sonicated for 15 minutes in a 1:1 solution of simple green:water. All parts were cleaned with 00000 steel wool, and a toothbrush. Gears were lubed w/Penn Blue, otyer moving parts with Corrosion X, and the reel was reassembled. Final hand polish with NeverDull wadding, and a chamois cloth.

I am pleased with tye results, and finally being able to ad a reel with the handle knob drag cam to my collection at a reasonable price.

There are some before pictures in the Ebay listing...
